Peer Tutor Training Application

We will be conducting a study on the peer tutoring program's outcomes. Click the boxes below to read the full assent and consent for participation in a peer tutoring investigational study (as tutors) for both the participating student and the participating student's parent or guardian.

Session Recording: I understand that tutoring sessions are recorded for student safety and training purposes. Recordings can not be downloaded or shared outside of the LearnSpeed system. Only Thinkist and UPenn Administrators have access to tutoring video recordings.

Invitation to Participate: I am being invited to participate in a research and evaluation study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania. This invitation is extended to me because I am a high school student in a district partnering for this grant program. The project is titled "Rural Pathways to Success" and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The duration of the project is from September 1, 2024 to December 31, 2027.

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the impact of training and participation in a peer tutoring program hosted on the Thinkist platform. As a participant, I will be trained on how to be a good tutor and help tutees learn better. Additionally, the study will provide me with access to post-secondary education information and expertise on careers in education.

Procedures: As part of this study, I will participate in an online workshop for training before implementation. During the study, I will be asked to take part in surveys, focus group interviews, and other data collection activities. These activities will help the research team understand the impact of the tutoring experience on student learning.

Risks: There are no potentially harmful risks related to participating in this study. However, there are minimal risks of breach of confidentiality, wherein identifying information about me might be released accidentally. The research team plans to take all necessary precautions to prevent the unauthorized and unintended release of any personal information about participants.

Benefits: Potential benefits to me include:

Improved student test scores.
Understanding of peer tutoring and pedagogy.
Opportunities to learn about and practice careers in education.
Increased awareness of post-secondary college education possibilities and careers.
Opportunities to interact with experts from the field who can provide me with information regarding careers in the identified fields.

Disclaimer/Withdrawal: My participation in this study is completely voluntary, and I may withdraw at any time. I can withdraw from the study by not attending the training or by choosing not to participate in surveys or focus group interviews. Even if I choose not to participate in surveys or focus group interviews, I am still invited to participate in the duration of the program. If I withdraw, no further data or information will be collected from me for research, but earlier data may be used for research and analysis.

Alternatives: I may choose not to participate in this study.

Confidentiality: All information collected in this study will be kept private and you will not be identified by name. Authorized representatives of the University of Pennsylvania (IRB), committees which are charged with protecting the rights and welfare of research subjects, may be provided access to research records that identify you by name. The documents from this study will be kept in a locked storage cabinet, or in a safe online portal managed by the University of Pennsylvania or the Thinkest platform. Only the researchers and the evaluator will have access to these documents and they will be destroyed by December 31, 2035.

Future Use: Until destroyed, my data may be de-identified and be stored and distributed for future research.
